Paper: Making, dyeing
& eco-printing

Over time I have become more aware of the potential impact that my art materials have on myself, the environment and those around me. As a result, I have sought out natural materials and colours that can minimise that potential harm. This is an on-going process as I learn more about the different materials with which I work.
I have also recently planted a native garden with plant species that are indigenous to my local environment. They are drought tolerant and can handle our extremely hot days. Many of these grasses and rushes produce wonderful fibres and dyes for papermaking and respond well to harvesting. There is also something satisfying about growing the plants that I use to make my paper, or anticipating the arrival of seasons when specific plants will be available again. Food waste is another useful source of fibre or dye which can be extracted before passing it on to my compost worms. All these activities remind me how we as humans can work more harmoniously with the natural world.
