Looking Back/Looking Forward

The artworks for Looking Back/Looking Forward were created as a response to the uncertainty of the pandemic era and explored the experience of nostalgia through sensory memories and the process of remembering, as well as the role it plays in the present. Although nostalgia is primarily understood as a past-focussed activity, it has also been found to contribute meaning and motivation in the present.

Drawing from personal nostalgic beach memories, the artworks examine the connections that lead from the meaningful past into the present, and which then, in turn, inspire motivation going forward.

Paper folding and cutting techniques were used to create windows through which to view the drawn images, representing their distance from the present moment.
